Typical Brewer 12.8 Layout

Boat Design

The Boat was originally built in Florida, in Fort Myers. Not far from where we bought the boat in Riviera beach.

The Brewer 12.8 is a development of the Whitby 42, a cruising boat from the board of Ted Brewer.

Brewer was known as one of the great modern cruising boat designers. According to the designer, the Brewer 12.8 uses the same basic hull and deck as the Whitby 42, a boat that was designed in 1971. Hull changes to the Whitby 42 were made by cutting out the long keel and attached rudder, replacing them with a more modern short keel and skeg-mounted rudder. This eliminated a lot of wetted surface, improving the light-air performance. To improve windward performance, a high aspect ratio centerboard extends through the bottom of the 12.8s shallow keel. Since the board is not ballasted, it does not affect stability, but can be used when reaching to shift the center of lateral resistance.

History

Not much info on the first owner who purchased the boat new in 1984. The second owners, Ron and his wife, had the boat from 1994 until 2016. We still have his original chart of the Caribbean, covered in little notes about great stops and places to avoid. We will be adding our own to continue the tradition! Ron is also apparently publishing a book about his adventures on the boat. We are waiting for more info on the details of the book!

The previous to us, Rex, purchased the boat in Malaysia in 2016. Rex has almost completed a circumnavigation, with the exception of the Panama Canal and instead two separate trips, his first was a long clockwise passage of the Pacific from Maylasia, stopping in San Francisco and Mexico before returning through the South Pacific islands. After a couple of years dormant due to covid lockdown, he left again, This time heading west, passing India, South Africa, up the west African coast, then across to Brazil, then windward islands, Dominican Republic, Bahamas and then into Florida. His aim was to bring her back to where she was born. And this was where we found her in Riviera Beach! His record passage was about 50 days at sea!
